The
documentary series on BBC1, Son of God, used the latest scientific
technology to bring the story of Jesus Christ to life. Detailed historical
research aided by computer graphics reconstruct the life and times of
Christ and re-examined some of the traditional Christian stories.
There
were three episodes each lasting an hour long. The first episode had
viewing figures of over 6 million. The
BBC hoped the computer-generated images would become a major talking point
and that the series would finally bury criticism by church leaders that
the corporation had marginalized serious religious discussion.
Jeremy
Bowen, as presenter, was well chosen. His style is direct and
dispassionate; he is a former BBC Middle East correspondent who used to
report on the troubled events in the
Jerusalem
area between
Palestinians and Jews. The program was an attempt to be quite provocative
and bring religious programmes back into mainstream TV schedules. It was
shown on BBC1 at 9.10 on a Sunday evening (prime time).
Ideally
you should look at lots of different types SRPs on TV. From
your study do you think there is an increasing coverage of SRPs on
TV from for instance TV schedules you have looked at? Or are we just
getting the same old religious programmes? Does TV mirror our multi-faith
nation?
SON
OF GOD - AN SRP
Write
the above title in your books. Then answer the following:-
1. Write a definition down for SRPs.
2.
Write a basic overview outlining what Son of God is about.
3.
The programme uses computer graphics how effective is this in bringing
the story to life. Do you think it helps bring it alive to a new computer
games generation? Did it work for you?
4.
The programmes use historical information/facts to back up their claims
when talking about Jesus BUT they do not spend a lot of time getting
across his spiritual message. Do you think this would annoy Christians?
5.
If you were a Christian would you be happy/unhappy with the amount of SRPs
on TV? Explain.
