The Turin Shroud

Pathologists have said that the image seems to be genuinely that of a man who has been crucified.  What does the shroud itself tell us and why do people link it with Jesus?

The Evidence in the gospel as to the fate of Jesus seems to have very close links with what we find on the cloth.

Jesus was struck with a blow to the face (Mt.27:30, Mk15:19) and crowned with thorns (Mt27:29, Mk15:17), this seems to coincide with the markings around the face and forehead.

Jesus was scourged (Mt27:26, Mk15:15), on the back there over a 100 marks which show wounding similar to the type inflicted by Roman soldiers on their victims.

Jesus is made to carry a heavy cross (Jn19:17), the shoulders exhibit marks as if carrying a heavy object.

Jesus we believe was crucified by inserting nails in his hands and feet (Jn20:25), the areas close to the wrists and feet show evidence of being damaged in this way.

Jesus' legs were not broken (Jn19:33), nor are the man on the shrouds legs.

A lance was stuck into Jesus' side to see if he was dead (Jn19:34), there is a mark on the man's right hand side showing a wound in the side of his chest which could have been made by a similar type of instrument.

It seems an incredible coincidence that this might have been another man other than Jesus who was crucified and had exactly the same wounds as Jesus - or is it an elaborate forgery following the details from the gospels?
